About this deal

This is not intended to be a full statement of all your rights under the Distance Selling Regulations. Horus now seems to have settled on his path and is committed to doing whatever it takes to gain the upper hand in waging his revolt against insurmountable odds. The other worldly space wizard aspect is amazing for creating wonder and horror in a grimdark setting. Despite all the issues with the writing and characterisation, the last third of the book really picks up its pace and the end of it - even though it is signposted - still comes as a shock.

The battle of Istvan III is a long one, longer than all the ones in the previous 2 books packed together, an epic and bloody tale of death and betrayal like an ancient greek tragedy. Leading the surviving loyalists he pulled out of the fight, Tarvitz takes advantage of Eidolon's undisciplined attack and manages to repel the assault. Despite the amount of the novel dedicated to chronicling Horus' descent to evil, there seems to be a big jump where he crosses the line. I’ve yet to read a novel from him that couldn’t be described as bolter-porn, and Galaxy in Flames is no exception.

Counter tells us about all these horrifying and heartbreaking moments with the other legions without showing us. Putting their own concerns aside, Garviel Loken and his loyal kinsmen lead their companies to the surface only to learn the full, horrifying truth, and the legendary war known as the Horus Heresy begins with the most foul act of betrayal imaginable. When I finished Horus Rising, the comments were fairly unanimous that I should read False Gods and Galaxy in Flames next, but I'm done with them now.

This novel does its job best focusing on the ground forces of space marines fighting treachery, and that’s what a lot of us are showing up for. Know No Fear gets everything right that Counter’s didn’t, and I get the feeling that not just Counter, but every Horus Heresy author, should look up to Abnett’s creations in this particular series as an example. philosophising between the loyalists, something that would make the protagonists - into whom we have invested over twenty-four hours - more human, and thus their murders more tragic. Also, in the last pages of this book my earlier questions about the nature of the primarchs are pretty well answered. That only really happens near the end of the book and it's pretty much because book three of the Horus Heresy gets us to a point that the future books in the series will be racing to catch up to.
