Literary experts both praise and criticize Kingston's writing style. She combines fact with fiction—relying on her own memories, her mother's "talk stories," and her own vivid imagination—to create a view of what it is like to grow up a Chinese-American female. The critics who appreciate her ability to mold stories in this way especially like the way she reworks traditional myths and legends to modernize their messages. This technique irritates other critics, however, especially those who are Asian Americans. They argue that Kingston's retelling of Chinese myths and legends detracts from the original purposes they were meant to serve. In addition, these critics state that her dependence on so much inventiveness renders her writing difficult to classify as autobiography or fiction.

I normally don’t do too well with translated fiction, it often feels too formal for me but I actually really enjoyed this one, particularly in the last part of the book when things really heated up and it all got super dark and creepy. There are a fair few characters to remember & I did get them muddled up sometimes jumping from timeline to timeline but I got there in the end. It’s a relatively short book with short & snappy chapters which I love. Oh and my copy had the most stunning sprayed edges I’ve ever seen on a book, if you like that sort of thing! Billy didn’t expect to feel different. It’s just a kiss. Things hadn’t been different between them after Steve kissed him the first time and they shouldn’t be different this time, either. But as Steve tugs him upwards by his belt loops, as Steve throws an arm around his shoulder and says something about Mrs. Carlisle calling the Neighborhood Watch on them unless they get a move on, Billy feels something in his chest grow While the investigation proceeds with Maxine trying to get her older teenage daughter to keep her with the new baby, disturbing secrets are unearthed in and around the crime scene. How the women are connected is of course the crux and it's an interesting journey to get there. Donn V.
