About this deal

The next morning I was in Frank’s office, not to steal him as a client (I promised Warren I’d never do that) but I felt I owed it to tell him first, since he was the one to encourage me into PR and away from the newspaper business in the first place. Many of the people that worked for me over the years went on to very successful careers in the agency, studio, and network businesses. My father, Eddie Fisher, and my mother, Debbie Reynolds, were both represented by Jim Mahoney during some of the most important times in their lives. Mahoney provides a journey through Hollywood as only someone who worked behind the scenes of the studios. But the biggest laugh for any veteran Hollywood movie buff is when he describes his estate on North Camden as "once the home of Jeanette MacDonald and Nelson Eddy, musical superstars of the 40s and 50s".

Mahoney even touched my sister Carrie’s professional life when he was asked by then Fox Studios boss Alan Ladd Jr.Wes finds all this out while he goes to Ohio with Laurel, where he begins to piece more on what his mother was involved with. I enjoyed the author's (occasional) candid opinions; as well as learning about certain details that only an insider could provide.

It didn’t take the brain of a white rat to get Frank Sinatra or Judy Garland a front-page cover story, it was quite another thing to convince newspaper and magazine editors to bury a story or alter scandalous facts that might otherwise prove detrimental to some client. Though Wes Gibbins is Charles' biological son, Alfred Enoch, who plays Wes is actually only 4 years younger than Wilson Bethel, who plays Charles Mahoney. No one would deny that entertainers in those days – and maybe Frank in particular – had to have a relationship with the mob. Her husband at the time, Meshulam Riklis, was a client of ours and owner of the Riviera Hotel in Las Vegas. Her anecdotes are humorous, heartfelt, and supremely captivating, recounted with the passion of a true survivor and the acerbic wit of a weathered, street-wise New Yorker.
