I do plan to re-read this in the future, because I have some lingering questions. I'm sure they were answered along the way and I just didn't catch it. I definitely won't be listening to the audiobook on my second attempt. This story will require my full attention. The only adult in Taylor’s life is Hannah, and even she is distant and evasive. When Hannah leaves town without telling Taylor where she is going, Taylor investigates. The school principal tells her that Hannah has gone to Sydney to care for a friend, and Taylor suspects that there is more to this story than the principal is revealing. She comes to believe that Hannah’s disappearance has something to do with her. Marchetta’s ability to withhold the deepest of secrets while still telling a well-constructed novel is what drives the plot. She gradually reveals bits and pieces of the overall story offering the audience time to contemplate the actions of the characters and their past. The Reveal: The real identities of the five kids in Hannah's story: Narnie is Hannah, Jude is the Brigadier, Webb is Taylor's dead father, Tate is Taylor's absent mother, and Fitz is the Hermit and Jessa's father. On the Jellicoe Road by Melina Marchetta is a beautifully intricate novel that won the 2009 Michael L. Printz Award for excellence in young adult literature. The YA novel was first published in Austrailia in 2006 and made its debut in the United States in 2008 with an abbreviated title Jellicoe Road . But grief makes a monster out of us sometimes . . . and sometimes you say and do things to the people you love that you can't forgive yourself for.”

Taylor is leader of the boarders at the Jellicoe School. She has to keep the upper hand in the territory wars and deal with Jonah Griggs—the enigmatic leader of the cadets, and someone she thought she would never see again. Another piece of the puzzle is a book Hannah's been writing for years about five children, three of whom survive a terrible car accident on the Jellicoe Road. The more Taylor reads the book, the more convinced she is that it isn't just fiction. The Territory wars. I thought that storyline was limping on both feet. Why all the intensity if the whole thing only takes place for about 2 months each year? Why the whole issue with the Club House when it's only a few weeks when it becomes relevant? Honestly, just setting up a rivalry between the 'factions' would have been enough for the story. Especially since about halfway through the story any of that territory stuff becomes completely irrelevant as nobody pays any attention to it anymore. Apathetic Teacher: Most of the teachers at the Jellicoe School are temporary, so they don't have a vested interest in keeping a close eye on things. The students run rings around them. Children’s Book Council of Australia Book of the Year Award: Winner of the Children’s Book Council of Australia Book of the Year Award in the Older Readers category in 2007.

Taylor's only clue is a manuscript about five kids who lived in Jellicoe eighteen years ago. She needs to find out more, but this means confronting her own story, making sense of her strange, recurring dream, and finding her mother—who abandoned her on the Jellicoe Road.
