the les paul is currently my guitar of choice, despite my hatred for wireless controllers and rhythm games. Both the PlayStation 3 and the Xbox 360 came with wireless controllers but offered wired options for gamers still reluctant to move on from the bulky tethers of yore. Of course, it’s not a full-sized instrument, but the attention to detail in the design makes it a visually pleasing alternative for those looking to rock out in the virtual world.

I used a pair of side cutters to cut the connection at its base on the main board, then unscrewed and removed the PCB. One of the things you’ll appreciate about this game controller is that it’s pretty easy to pick up, even for beginners. The Gibson Explorer was ahead of its time, with a futuristic design that seemed like it came from a science fiction movie.

There’s a ~13 by 8 mm hole above the USB-C connector which needs to be filled to make the perimeter of the guitar look seamless. There’s a small circular plug covering the hole from the old USB cable (top left, behind the potentiometer wires) and a rectangular plug sitting on top of the USB-C port (right).

This means the PCB edge is going to be visible from outside the guitar, but that’s preferable to having to recess the port and use a specific-width USB cable.When the controller is connected to a Windows Vista or Windows XP PC, it shows up as a game controller. It's only an 18 ohm resistor (if that does say 180 on it) so just using the switch should be no problem.
