About this deal

Raising the Dead: The Production Logistics – 20 minute feature with contributions from Michael Gornick, Christine Forrest, John Amplas and Tom Dubensky. For a more in-depth take on the film, check out our review of the 4K Ultra HD Collector's Edition from Italy. We’re thrown right into the thick of it with a TV news station struggling through what is likely to be one of their last broadcasts. When the survivors are inside of the mall it’s a bit more toned down, with dialog taking front and center combined with some mild ambient noises from the surrounding areas. Interestingly, though, this version has only library music (The Goblins’ score was added later when the Theatrical Cut was complete).

The color palette is better represented with deeper reds, greens, and blues, which suffered a bit on Scream Factory’s previous Blu-ray. The picture quality for Dawn of the Dead was something I was fully expecting to be a “meh” 4K UHD when viewing. Things don’t get much better there, as the security guards try to control the group, and it’s not until they overpower and take things over themselves that they have a semblance of freedom. The 4K Ultra HD limited edition box set comes with a treasure trove of goodies and a region-locked Blu-ray disc containing tons of new bonus content while each UHD disc features separate commentary tracks. The WGC and HDR lend themselves to vivid colours and pop from the screen, the blood had never looked so intense.Like many of you, we here at The Bits are massive fans of Dawn of the Dead and have long been hoping for a deluxe edition of the film. WONKA — The Magical Adventure of a Young Chocolate Maker Comes Home on 4K, Blu-ray and DVD on February 27th!

Because Dawn of the Dead has been released so many times in many different territories on Laserdisc, DVD, Blu-ray, and recently on Ultra HD, it would likely have been nigh impossible for Second Sight to gather together every single piece of bonus material out there. Zombies and Bikers – New hour long documentary feature with contributions from John Amplas, Roy Frumkes, Tom Savini, Christine Forrest, Tom Dubensky, Tony Buba, Taso Stavrakis. We’re now saddled with a group of folks who range from awful to annoying, which is why it’s difficult for many (myself included) to enjoy this film fully. So little of Dawn of the Dead matters though, just an aimless zombie excursion whose best moments come during the introduction. You do have to take into consideration the age and budget of the film, it was quite limited at the time, and thus the restoration is not going to work miracles – it is still a cheap horror flick and is never going to rival modern digital filming techniques – and judged on those merits this is an amazing picture. And The Argento cut, which, again, some prefer due to its much faster pacing and musical score, but this is offset by missing huge swathes of characterisation, some of the best gags and some, what appear to be, indiscriminate cuts to action scenes – for me the worst of the presentations; but at least everyone has something. The calm presented as characters settle in, treating the undead masses outside as a shooting gallery, playing chess, and having sex, looks rather absurd. Grain is light-moderate to moderate, varying a bit from shot to shot, but it’s always natural-looking.
