This was M R James first collection of stories which he had begun many years previously, reading them to friends. Light edge rubbing to covers with slight creasing to the top of the front cover and a tiny chip at the bottom of the spine. Titles and decoration on both the spine and cover remain bright, but cloth shows moderate discoloration and small rubbed areas.

Containing seven short horror tales by James: 'A School Story'; 'The Rose Garden'; 'The Tractate Middoth'; 'Casting the Runes'; 'The Stalls of Barchester Cathedral'; 'Martin's Close', and 'Mr Humphreys and His Inheritance.

Both David Timson and Stephen Critchlow are superb vocal actors, with very pleasing voices, the voices of men you could sit and chat with over a pint of beer or a glass of port. Some later editions under this title contain both the original collection and its successor, More Ghost Stories of an Antiquary (1911), combined in one volume. Some corner wear to boards as well as wear to head and foot of spine, but the binding remains solid. R. Some of his stories are regarded as the best of their genre, using more realistic, contemporary settings than his predecessors who used more Gothic clichés.In his tales, the existence of ghosts is not to be doubted, and it’s also beyond dispute that ghosts cannot always be explained, or fully explained. The Mezzotint' – I really liked the interesting way in which the artifact in question here, the mezzotint of the title, manifested the supernatural and the foreboding sense of a quiet yet unstoppable horror that was the result. Most were composed to be read aloud for the entertainment of James's colleagues and students at Christmas gatherings, held annually in his rooms at King's College, Cambridge, where James was a fellow and, later, Dean.

Finely bound copy of the Dover edition, which kept the work of James available for American readers before the ghost story revival. I told her he was unknown to me, and she said: 'But his book was right in front of us, you even picked it up. When he has you thoroughly involved and at your most somnambulant, it is only then that the inexplicable suddenly rears its head, usually byway of a few powerful images that change the dream to nightmare. Always unnerving, sometimes freaky, often grotesque, they never fail to send a shiver down the spine. Ghost Stories of an Antiquary, Volume 2 comprises graphic adaptations of four spine-chilling stories by M.

Renowned for their wit, erudition and suspense, these stories are each masterfully constructed and represent a high achievement in the ghost genre. She was also the contributing editor of Electricomics flagship release, co-writing the sci-fi story Sway, with art by Nicola Scott. I enjoyed reading the stories in this book some where brought a shudder to your spine, but mild enough to enjoy at night. He has written articles for the likes of Fortean Times, Strange Attractor Journal, Darklore, and Paranormal Magazine, and is a contributing editor for The Daily Grail online.

With a contemporary ink inscription to the front free endpaper, dated December 25th 1911, and a Blackwell's bookseller's label to the front pastedown. Sus introducciones tienden a ser algo tediosas, y no es exactamente fácil de leer, pero es un verdadero maestro de lo escalofriante. Among them are such favorites as "Number Thirteen," "Canon Alberic's Scrap-book," and "Oh, Whistle, and I'll Come to You, My Lad. i-vi] vii-ix [x] xi [xii] 1 [2] 3-270 [271-272: blank] [note: last leaf is a blank], original tan buckram, front and spine panels stamped in orange and black, rear panel stamped in orange, fore and bottom edges untrimmed.R. James’s stories explore the darkness just beyond the flicker of the candle, behind the creaking door. The next best thing, I suppose, is a recording, to be enjoyed in the comfort of our own homes, and it’s a little startling to realise how recently recorded readings became available. Stephen Critchlow’s two readings, The Mezzotint and Oh, Whistle, and I’ll Come to You, My Lad, are taken from a 2 CD set released in 2007, Classic Ghost Stories (highly recommended, by the way), in which Mr Critchlow also reads Rats and two tales by Charles Dickens. Some of these tales are very creepy indeed; but they are perfect for spending those long Winter evenings with (with a glass of something warming perhaps.
