About this deal

The cover is gorgeous and the book contains a lot of interesting information about superstitions and folklore and terrific descriptions of the geography of the area but the story was a little much for me. Nadia explains that a Yazidi woman would not stand for any other woman to be treated as she and the other captives have been.

It’s a tense, cinematic read that gripped me from the very beginning and is one of the best books I’ve read this year. I was so excited when I found this book because I've lived in Scotland and the Hebrides are beautiful. The writing was good, and I enjoyed Sadie’s characterization, even though she made a few hasty decisions.Upon her escape, Nadia learns that her story as a survivor of the genocide and as a captive has been shared against her wishes to bolster someone else’s political agenda. Enforced accountability for war criminals who engage in sexual violence, she insists, could serve to deliver justice for survivors. Most village disputes were solved by Ahmed Jasso, our practical and diplomatic mukhtar, and he sided with Hezni. I thought the chapters were just the right size and almost always ended on a cliff hanger (so frustrating at times!

This story also offers an insight look into the rich, colourful and tight-knigt Yazidi culture, which I for one, was not aware of. I love the character of Sadie, she’s intuitive and has all the smarts, she is brave and single minded and I like the strongly evident thread of feminism throughout the book not just in her character.Previously available only in the Detroit underground, Renegade Video brings the extreme vision of reality filmmaker Jorje Krippe to a mainstre. The characters in this were really fascinating and I was so intrigued to find out who the masked figure was. After three brutal months in captivity, sold multiple times by various ISIS militants, Nadia managed to escape with the help of a Sunni Arab man, Nasser, and his family – pretending to be his wife as they fled to Iraqi Kurdistan. She begins a new life focused on telling the world her story - the reality of the pain, trauma, and shock of having people taken away from you and parts of your very being taken away from you that you will never ever get back.
