About this deal

Trespass Team is a passionate group of outdoor enthusiasts and experts hailing from the renowned UK brand, Trespass. The best method to stop being bitten in the Highlands is to use a repellent and to recognise the conditions when midges are likely to be most active and avoid going out in them. Scotland is not unique with its biting beasties, but the word seems to have spread far and wide, of the dreaded Scottish midge. Often without as the jacket has full hood but the easy on / off process can be handier than the zipped hood if removal of net is regular. The arguments for eradicating (or severely controlling) the Scottish biting midge are many and varied.

Midges are present in almost every environment on earth, except in freezing arctic conditions and hot deserts. The early autumn and early spring (October, November, December, January, February and March) are normally midge-free months in Scotland because it’s too cold for them.

Methods for avoiding midge bites usually fall into two main areas: coverage (to prevent midges from reaching your skin) and repellents (which reduce midge’s attraction to an individual). Midges, weather, tipping, driving, best time to visit and more…essential background for your trip to Scotland.

As an individual midge weighs about 1/8000gm it can’t take off in higher wind speeds – even by beating its wings at 1000 times per second – the highest wing-beat speed in the animal kingdom. Midge bites aren’t usually a serious problem but they can be irritating as they cause swelling and painful itching. We have tried and tested these and can clarify they do 100% what they claim - keeping the midges out and leaving you midge free to pursue whichever activity you need it for. Come to think of it, the fact that it was early October may have helped a little, though I had been eaten alive while photographing the Glenfinnan Viaduct just a few days earlier, on an equally sunny day. Although DEET and DMP are more effective than non-DEET or natural insect repellents, they are capable of melting some plastics (such as credit cards, glasses and synthetic clothing) and that isn’t really something we want to put our skin.

There are a few versions of the mosquito and midge jacket, so why not compare them all in one place? We share the dates of midge season in Scotland, the best time to visit to avoid midges and how to keep midges away when sitting outside.

This was the first natural insect repellent I ever bought and I was really pleased with the results. Midge bites don’t irritate me as much as mosquito or cleg (horse fly) bites and as midges don’t transmit disease to humans, I’m more relaxed about midges. We’ve been using Smidge insect repellent for about 6 years and find it to be very effective against the wee beasties. For cases where the product does not meet your requirements but is not faulty or damaged, items must be in immaculate condition with original tags and packaging intact.Through scrubby ground and it got very cloudy next thing we copped some, sun broke through and they were gone. Midges are carriers of arboviruses (viral infections transmitted to humans from a group of insects). Adult midges in Scotland generally start to come out in April and are active on the wing until October.
