About this deal

The hens were pretty wary of it on Monday (especially big bum Bella who is a wuss) but hunger got the better of them and they were hopping on and off the treadle (cautiously) quite quicky. So, there may be plenty of food in the feeder, but my chickens get about a day’s worth of feed and I need to push it down for them again. Since having it rats have eaten their way into the stable where I keep the chooks and now know the food is there, and the hens poop all over it.

I've been eyeing the Grandpa's Feeder after all the rave reviews on Youtube and other places, but I'm wondering if this feeder will repel bugs, especially ants. The most dangerous part of this feeder is the multitude of pinch points on each side, a total of six rotating parts, each that could trap a chicken’s feet or head, but the biggest danger is the two pinch points caused by the two side guards, allowing a perfect place for a bird to get caught. It literally took 5 seconds before one of them ran over, stepped on the plate and the lid on the feed lifted. For the first seven days, the feed trough lid is left fully open and the platform locked down while hens feed, so they become used to standing on the platform and putting their heads into the trough to feed. This poor review is because when I received this expensive feeder there was no protective packing in the box. The 103 third parties who use cookies on this service do so for their purposes of displaying and measuring personalized ads, generating audience insights, and developing and improving products. It takes a few weeks for them to get the hang of the feeder and some nervous chickens can take longer.

They work on a simple idea: A rat weighs around 300g, wild birds such as crows even less and the lid of the feeder will only open with a weight greater than about 500g so a chicken can open the feeder to eat but the others cannot! Going to get hubby to screw it all together tomorrow, then I'm going to ask him to board over a pallet so that it has a level platform to stand on - then we'll be all ready to go! It’s like a cereal box all the smaller bits are at the bottom of the packet and you get them last or its just dust! The hopper has a sloped back, so grain never gets stuck, it just naturally falls down into the feeding box. If you've read any of my other product reviews, you'll know that I have a "Golden Egg Award" where one egg means "don't go near this product! According to the online reviews the feeder leaks when it rains, probably because of the inadequate overhang of the lid on the corners. Not only were they eating the corn flung on the floor as chickens are messy eaters, they were helping themselves straight from the feeder. The standard feeder that was used in this test holds 9Kg which is a little under half a sack of feed and can feed half a dozen chickens for 10 days.
