About this deal

The unused expansion port is missing, and the reset button was changed over to a much larger pause function one.

It had a slower pace (which goes in the face of it’s main selling point), there were no loops and it generally required more thought. There is no card port (and by extension, no 3D Glasses support), the unused expansion port was removed and the reset button has been omitted in favour of a larger pause button. Several Master System games were released for download on Nintendo's Wii Virtual Console, beginning with Fist of the North Star in 2008 in Japan and Wonder Boy in North America. The Master System launched in North America in 1986, followed by Europe in 1987, and then in Brazil and Korea in 1989. There’s just something about it’s simplicity, and the variation in the main character which appeals to me. However, it’s also worth noting that there were various master system releases which never made it to the Mega drive.

Tectoy, a Brazilian toy company startup focused on electronic toys, reached out to Sega about distributing their products. The Sega Master System II was released in 1990 and was a redesigned version of the Sega Master System. Different Master System consoles included built-in games, including Snail Maze, Hang-On/ Safari Hunt, Alex Kidd in Miracle World and Sonic the Hedgehog. Looking on the back, we see the top is held on with just five screws, and that the system is labeled the “POWER BASE RGB”. Recreating moulds of original shells, casting them from quality ABS, redesigning hardware such as power supplies, USB-C, audio and more, to upgrade your consoles to the highest quality available. The second meant France had to be catered to anyway, and the first meant that the French video industry was more used to working across video standards. There are similarities between the Game Gear and the Master System hardware, but the games are not directly compatible; Master System games are only playable on Game Gear using the Master Gear Converter accessory.

Coming after the Mega Drive version, it was a completely different game, designed to cater to the Master System’s hardware. For a system from the mid 80’s, I think it performs remarkably well compared to what is essentially a 90s 16 bit behemoth. Classic games include Sonic, Streets of Rage, Ninja Gaiden, Phantasy Star and Alex Kidd in Miracle World (which came pre-loaded on many UK consoles). The little blue fella quickly became Sega’s mascot with his absolutely rapid action, his unique spin attack and his varied enemies, all balanced with a beautiful difficulty level – probably a bit easy in all fairness.Sega released another console, the SG-1000 II, [20] featuring several hardware alterations, including detachable controllers. I could have picked Super hang on or columns from this pack, but World cup Italia was just so damn disliked, that I couldn’t resist it. Despite hesitation given the situation with Tonka in the US, Tectoy was eventually given liberty to manage Sega products in Brazil. The Master System has had continued success in Brazil, where dedicated "plug and play" consoles emulating the original hardware continue to be sold by Tectoy, including portable versions. The Ultimate History of Video Games: The Story Behind the Craze that Touched our Lives and Changed the World.

In most regions, the Master System II's A/V port was omitted, leaving only RF output available; this was reversed in France, where the local version of the Master System II had only A/V video output available and omitted the RF hardware. Like all Master Systems 2, this console contains a built-in game; in this case, it’s Alex Kidd in Miracle World. As you can see from the comparison shot (both on the RetroTINK-5X, of course), with the component cable first, the signal is again a bit too dark with the HD Retrovision cable. After fending off the NES owners, I used to argue with my Mega Drive owning friends and come up with reason upon reason why the Master System could still compete. So, I’m glad that I received a Master System for Christmas ’91 instead of a Mega Drive, because frankly, most people I know who had a Mega Drive from day 1 are dicks… they were dicks then, and they’ll remain dicks for the rest of their lives. In 1993, reviewers scored it 2, 2, 3, and 3 out of 10, noting its abandonment by Sega in North America and lack of new releases.
