About this deal

Instead of clamming up and whimpering: “I’m just looking thanks,” I proffered my uncertainty, and said that I was new to whisky.

I’m also not saying that you would have loved it, because it seems to be one of those malts that people either love or hate. Palate: Delicate light and smooth, baked cereals and vanilla a contrast to the nose making a whisky of 2 part. The driver will input your year of birth into their device and may then require an ID check to complete the age verification process. On this spring day in 2021, I was already suitably oiled from the afternoon in the Bow Bar, so I had a bit more courage than if I had walked in fresh from the electric bus.

After a few pours, the overt meatiness has dissipated somewhat and I find a nice taste of pineapple, maybe popcorn and some apple or even lemon knitted together with the oily malt, a little smoke.

I happen to be a huge citrus fan and by that I mean I can sit and eat a whole lime and enjoy it, so to find big zingers inside the bold Craigellachie signature is really exciting. With Water: A few drops of water release a nice orange peel note which merges well with the caramel. I went through that bottle quicker than any other bottle I’ve had to date… well, maybe the Ardnamurchan Cask Strength went quicker. Craigellachie was not a bottle that I was really aware of before going on a virtual tasting, where I got to try this as well as a lovely sample of Angel’s Envy. There are hints of rechar cask, and a few notes shared with Tomatin Legacy, which has a lot of rechar casks in the recipe. In the mouth: Initially unexpectedly nondescript, but this dram really opened up after the bottle had been open a week or so. The inaugural release in this collection showcases the award-winning 13-year-old Craigellachie Single Malt, artfully finished in Bas-Armagnac casks originating from the northernmost region of Gascony, France. Cognac also uses a serpentin(e) arrangement and wine heater, so it would make a safe bet as one of the next finishes in this series from Craigellachie. Way back in the 1890s Alfred Barnard described "the chief characteristic of the Craigellachie brand is the pineapple flavour it develops with age".

I’d spent the afternoon drinking whisky and chatting absolute tripe with my uncle, in the Bow Bar, stationed near the bottom of the city’s most photographed cobbled Old Town thoroughfare, Victoria Street. It has a really great natural light gold colour and being non chill-filtered has a slight cloudy hint. The distillery's traditional production methods, including the use of worm tubs, impart a robust and full-bodied character to its whiskies, setting them apart from their Speyside counterparts. The bourbon casks bring vanilla, toffee and fudge notes to the fore, and the sherry casks provide richness and complexity. That’s because despite it being ultimately some glass objects arranged neatly on wooden shelves, there’s an inherent pressure to the retail whisky experience. He asked me what I was looking for and once again I didn’t really know, however this time I knew what I didn’t want.
