Prior to season three I hadn’t watched the series but, heard nothing but positives things from those that had (I have since seen seasons one and two). The sweeping sets, gorgeous music and truly beautiful direction all play out spectacularly and make this film one that somehow betters the first entry, all while still working as a condensed season of the series. The music is gorgeous and often fills the space when those ambient sounds aren’t there in smaller moments. I was immediately taken with the hybrid of period drama, dry comedy, mystery, and family history of the show and first film.In listening to the Dolby Atmos surround mix I found it to be of the less aggressive variety, but, considering the source material that’s not a complete surprise.

My biggest thoughts on this film are that it’s not only great to look at, but something about a film like this feels comforting and joyous. She has touching scenes with Lady Mary and Isobel Merton, when she lets down her grand dame facade to speak her heart and confide in two people who are dear to her. The plethora of characters aren’t all complex but are superbly drawn with a distinctive aesthetic that ebbs and flows with the melodramatic proceedings.

Instead it humanizes them all, exposing their strengths, weaknesses but above all the implicitness found in their devotion to their way of life, one another and their genuine and shared struggle to co-exist amidst the ever-changing world around them.
