About this deal

charmingly told and stunningly illustrated, this is a wonderful collection of short stories narrating select moments in cardans life before, during, and after the events of the ‘folk of the air’ series. And these two, in addition to a prophecy looming over this young prince, are truly the first catalysts to this story and I was so in love seeing behind the scenes. Some might think of him as a strong draught, burning the back of one’s throat, but invigorating all the same. This felt exactly like that one (1) book of fairy tales I had when I was little, filled with drawings and old stories about fairies and kings and queens and witches.

They indulged all their worst impulses, revenged themselves for the least offence, and took every last thing they wanted. He’s grateful, of course, but it feels as though it’s just another of the ridiculous, absurd, dangerous things she does. Whatever a reader is looking for--heart-in-throat action, deadly romance, double-crossing, moral complexity--this is one heck of a ride. Although not pivotal to the main plot and story it gives it an edge that it didn’t have before reading this. They’re just so damn cute and good for each other, which is why Jurdan is one of my favorite enemies-to-lovers couples.

This tale includes delicious details of life before The Cruel Prince, an adventure beyond The Queen of Nothing, and familiar but pivotal moments from The Folk of the Air trilogy, told wholly from Cardan’s perspective. To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average.Because, to me, if you’re just writing the story again but from a different characters perspective then you probably should have just included their point of view in the original story rather than just rewriting the story again.

Funny how I hate angst until it's Cardan being angsty, and that angst involves him scribbling a certain Jude Duarte's name over and over again while ink drips onto his clothes but he's too busy pining over Jude to care. How the King of Elfhame Learned to Hate Stories is one of the most beautiful, aesthetic books I’ve ever seen. This lavishly illustrated tome, more a series of vignettes than a complete novel, shows critical moments in Cardan’s life, including moments previously seen through Jude’s perspective. I wasn’t sure what to expect when I picked up this book and started reading but it still blew all my expectations away. Jude, who struggles with a world she both loves and hates and would rather be powerful and safe than good, is a compelling narrator. As soon as I saw a copy in person I realized how foolish these doubts were though and I can honestly say that this book is well worth treating yourself to a physical copy of.

Cardan is such a fun character and reading from his perspective provided all new insight into his decisions and motivations. How he was given Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland that Jude comes across in his room in The Cruel Prince. The entirety is framed within a moment that takes place after the end of The Queen of Nothing (2019), providing a glimpse into the maturing relationships between Jude and Cardan and between Cardan and his responsibilities as High King of Elfhame, a land whose multihued, multiformed denizens cannot lie.Naturally it was marvellously written and portrayed the fae in a wonderful manner which merged their beauty and wickedness superbly. You get to, finally, see the world through the eyes of the infamous ‘cruel prince’ and get a glimpse into how his mind works. This is a heady blend of Faerie lore, high fantasy, and high school drama, dripping with description that brings the dangerous but tempting world of Faerie to life. At Books2Door, we believe that reading is a fundamental skill that every child should have to help improve their vocabulary, grammar, and critical thinking skills.
