Tellingly, Idle contributes a warmly touching and suitably irreverent introduction to the book, affirming the influence Feldman’s early shows had on the Pythons. This is an odd book as it really does seem to be the unedited notes from Marty, as if he was preparing an autobiography. A real gem and an essential for any lover of Marty, the Pythons and the surreal comedy of the 50s, 60s and 70s.

Feldman created a number of immensely successful and influential shows, and was one of the most essential creative forces in British comedy embodied also by his close friends and creative partners from Beyond the Fringe (especially Peter Cook and Dudley Moore) and Monty Python (especially John Cleese, Graham Chapman and Eric Idle). Don’t praise absolutely everything, don’t try and force your view of Marty’s genius into the reader’s face, and please, please don’t believe every anecdote a comedian repeats on a chat show couch. Born in London's East End in 1934, the grandchild of emigrants from Eastern Europe, his descriptions of his traditional and penurious Jewish background, miscreant behaviour at school and the regular beatings by antisemitic schoolboys are the most moving. Despite being a fascinating read, the book would have benefited from some editorial intervention and retrospective objectivity. How odd to publish an autobiography — and it is an autobiography, not a ghosted effort — 33 years after your death.

Towards the end of the book he gets more reflective about politics, religion and the absurdities of life. His talent and persistence, aided by the warmth of the love he so clearly feels for Loretta Sullivan, his wife, and the respect and support of his close friends see him through the ups and downs inevitable in a creative's life. A particularly good autobiography, I think largely because it was an early draft, finished days before the author's death. The Chalke History Festival announces a new name, new look, and tons for history buffs to get their teeth into! If you read his books in isolation, you'd believe that each of his subjects was the biggest mega- celebrity going! I think I just don't know enough about Marty Feldman and I am even less interested in English life to care to look up the many expressions in this book.

Hilarious, deeply charming, aphoristic, ironic, charged throughout with lust for life and filled with scenes of great vanished eras and and portraits of other performers and friends, Eye Marty is the amazing discovery of the story of a man who was at the heart of the British comedy revolution. On film, in Mel Brooks' Young Frankenstein (1974), Feldman played Igor (pronounced "EYE-gore", a comic response to Gene Wilder's claim that 'it's pronounced FRONK-EN-STEEN'). Yes, Marty Feldman was a very funny man, but I’m not convinced that he was the timeless legend this biography makes him out to be. This is a "no holds barred" account of his poor childhood right through to his, as he says, dream of a marriage to "the most beautiful girl ever" and his international stardom. Marty Feldman's autobiographical magnum opus of his life in London's East End, explores many of comedy's most notable twentieth century conspirators, and meditations on the creativity that fueled it all.E ha deciso di far vedere al lettore quanto è stato bravo nel suo compitino, come qualunque ragazzino che ha studiato a memoria. One of the nicest things, underlying the whole book, is Marty's love for his wife, Lauretta, and hers for him.

I've always been a fan of Marty's, and to read bits of his sketch writing and poetry scattered throughout an autobiography of fearless, comedy genius and scrappy bohemian bliss. A childhood injury, a car crash, a boating accident, and reconstructive eye surgery may also have contributed to his appearance.

In 1976, Feldman ventured into Italian cinema, starring with Dayle Haddon in the sex comedy 40 Gradi All'Ombra del Lenzuolo ( Sex with a Smile). The Marty Feldman Comedy Machine (1971–72) was a television series co-produced by Associated Television (ATV) in the UK and the American Broadcasting Company, produced at ATV's Elstree Studios, near London. Excessive drug use and even food poisoning were among explanations of the cause of the massive heart attack that killed him. The most touching passages are reserved for the meeting and wooing of his wife Lauretta, whom he credits with his happiness.
