About this deal

The wire itself has a metal ball at the end which fits in a housing in the plastic from the adjoining car side. Anyway, last week, bonnet wouldn't open, let alone close, no matter how hard I tugged the release or jiggled the bonnet.

However, the release springs seem stronger, so the bonnet really "pops" when you pull the release now! However, I do live in the worst place for cars in the UK - they salt roads for well over 6 months of the year up here. As stated, I didn't know where this lever was, so had to remove the catch body completely by removal of the third bolt. Having said that, if you have removed the first two bolts and loosen the third, the catch body will slightly lift out of its location slightly (rotating around the third bolt) If you know where to go on the catch body, you might be able to get a screwdriver (or some bent bit of metal) in to manually pull the release lever down and release the fish-hook catch.

You'll now be able to lift open the bonnet and the locking mechanism will come with it allowing you to fix/reattach cable etc. I would (and have) recommend your site to others I was quite satisfied with the quality of the information received, the professional with whom I interacted, and the quick response time. Don't worry; as another poster says, this plastic seems to have no purpose and is hidden when the badge is replaced.

We get them open by spraying in releasing fluid and keeping working the catch, opening and closing the bonnet up to the safety time and time again until it lets go. The lead is secured along it's length to the bodywork in two places by two clips (one circled right).

The bonnet lock screws are T27 in size, although I didn't have mine, so I used a T25 bit which worked fine.

Hi, I know this has been mentioned before, but even so I can't find the answers I need and I'm DESPO! Take the mechanism off and clean it, soak it overnight in paraffin or diesel then clean it with a wire brush. It's held in a holder underneath, you will need to look over the bonnet as it sits behind the radiator next to the headlamp. Was trying to fight around with the mechanism and I ended up breaking the bonnet latch cable plastic guide I know for Fuc* Sake -_- Any ways. I've read several how-to guides on the net (including the excellent one on this thread) but none of them go into much detail about this bit so I'm assuming I'm doing something horribly wrong!check if it's the bonnet catch (behind the VW badge) that isn't closing properly and holding the bonnet down. The catch would occasionally jam but would release eventually, however one time it jammed completely with the catch released so I could not lock down the bonnet, it just kept bouncing up and down on the manual release, very annoying. However, please note that our tool is for reference only and we recommend that you check the part number on your old unit prior to purchasing. The two T20 screws here and remove them from the car {yellow}, these are the screws just next to the headlights in this picture and then once they are removed from the car squeeze in the two plastic clips {red} can do one at a time and then remove the grill from the car.

It does allow however, sufficient access under the released catch body to get at the above-mentioned lever, and pull this down to release the fish-hook. You can just about see the head of the two bolts if you get down below this point and squint up under this plastic lip from below with a torch. It does amazing at clearing off the old built up crap on the bonnet lock and will help get rid of any build ups before you regrease it. Last time I tried to remove the rust and stop it re-appearing by applying some oil but this didn't turn out to be a long term fix. So I took it off again and went back to using the claw and then greased the latch up (especially when the clip is in the locked position - you can get down in the back of it with WD40 and grease).
