About this deal

I hesitate to rain on the parade of laurels being heaped upon this book. I enjoyed looking at these photos. It was inspiring and warming to see the vivacity and diversity of New York's humans. From street photographer Brandon Stanton, Humans of New York is a celebration of individuality and a tribute to the spirit of New York City, filled with photographs of its residents and stories from their lives. Dumas, Daisy (March 15, 2016). "Humans of New York creator Brandon Stanton pens open letter to Donald Trump". The Sydney Morning Herald . Retrieved March 15, 2016. Brandon Stanton was seated on a metal folding chair in the cavernous basement of an East Harlem café. He leaned forward and jabbed at the air with long, pale fingers. “I love the idea of juice! Juice, juice, juice!” he said. “I’m excited!” In association with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), Stanton went to Europe in 2015 to capture migrants and refugees seeking asylum in Europe from their homelands, most of which are war zones. [6] This resulted in much support, donations, and awareness of the European migrant crisis. [17] Stanton stated in a BBC interview that he had to use a new type of interviewing style for these subjects, because he did not think it pertinent to ask about their past or future. [18]

Retrieved January 11, 2019.Stanton still struggles with his professional identity. He had tried calling himself a journalist, but it never felt right. When he called himself a writer, the writers piled on. “ ‘No, you’re not a writer. This isn’t writing,’ ” Stanton said, imitating them. “ ‘This guy’s being celebrated as a photographer, but he’s not a good photographer.’ What do I tell my mom I am? Every time I try on those clothes, they don’t fit right.” Authors should read all these Humans books and re-think all their novels – so many ghastly or remarkable circumstances explained by these interviewees leave most fiction looking timid and becalmed. Over weeks of conversations and text exchanges, Stanton had withdrawn from my attempts to parse the power dynamics of the empire he’d built. As the sole proprietor of an economy of good, he could elevate his friends, his acquaintances, and strangers as everyday heroes; focus the generous attention of 30 million followers; and enrich his subjects, all the while insisting that his own values and politics did not come into play. Sometimes he’d evade my questions; other times, he’d grow upset or defensive. As the subject of a profile, the narrative was out of his control — and he hated it: “You sit in judgment of my life, my work, and my many mistakes and shortcomings,” he texted me early one morning. Later, when I brought up my discomfort with the way he interviewed the woman from Arkansas, he argued that his subjects “aren’t walking around thinking about their lives in terms of politics. That’s how journalists and professors look at the world, but my job is to express a person’s perspective of how they live their life. I don’t try to do it from 10,000 feet up in the air and get a hundred different opinions.” Looking at the pictures and putting together a story when there weren’t any captions was such an exhilarating experience. Hurricane Relief Goes Viral, With a Little Help From Tumblr and Indiegogo". Observer. November 12, 2012 . Retrieved February 26, 2017. A] lovely collection of photos and essays... The images are gorgeous, and the effect is like walking through a version of our city where startlingly honest thought bubbles appear over everyone's heads.” — New York MagazineOf course, as a result it was pretty heard trying to figure out which pictures to feature, but I managed to narrow it down (out my 80+ pictures): In March 2016, Stanton wrote an open letter to Donald Trump that went viral on Facebook, garnering over 2.3 million likes and over 1.1 million shares, making it one of the most-shared posts in the history of Facebook. Series

On August 29, 2017, the documentary Humans of New York: The Series, based on the blog, premiered on Facebook Watch as part of that premium content platform's launch. From 2014 to 2017, Stanton interviewed over 1200 New Yorkers on video. [45] Season one included thirteen episodes which ranged from fifteen and twenty-five minutes in length and touched on common themes across the interviews. As of December 2017, it was the most followed series on Facebook Watch. [46] See also [ edit ] La Ferla, Ruth (March 26, 2016). "Humans of New York Founder Takes On Donald Trump". The New York Times.
