About this deal

So off we go again: 40 full breaths, exhale, then hold it, this time for a minute and a half. Hof says my blood chemistry is changing. I feel a bit tingly, hear a slight ringing noise, but I can do it, a minute and a half, he times it on his phone. I’ve never held my breath for that long. The best part about this breathwork is how immediate you start to feel the benefits. When you practice the standard Wim Hof Method, you’ll feel it throughout your body within several minutes. Personally, I feel awake and energized after a few rounds. It takes away all my morning grogginess. Mindset - Build your willpower, inner clarity, sensory awareness, and innate joyfulness in the miracle of living

In nature, it is not only the physically weak but the mentally weak that get eaten. Now we have created this modern society in which we have every comfort, yet we are losing our ability to regulate our mood, our emotions.” Breathing sounds simple enough, but once you start practicing the method yourself, you’ll see how difficult it can be. And as for jumping in cold water? That’s no walk in the park either. If you have a bad hangover, do 3-4 rounds of the Wim Hof Method and this can supposedly cure a hangover. Breathing alkalizes the blood, which eliminates the acidity caused by alcohol. We only go through this life once, and we might as well enjoy ourselves while we do. Those who would deprive themselves of simple pleasures like an occasional beer may benefit from it in terms of their short-term performance, but they aren’t nourishing the soul. Early in the book he talked of living as a squatter for 8 years and this kind of put me off. He then ventured into "chakras" and "third eye" stuff and I found it hard to keep going. But I pressed on. Further statements like "all you need is love" and "Love will open you up to the power of your mind" proved too esoteric for my logical and pragmatic disposition, but I finally finished. The 'Iceman' Wim Hof shares his remarkable life story and powerful method for supercharging your strength, health and happiness. I have no doubt his method has helped many people but do not accept all he claims for it. That said, he is a passionate, inspiring and interesting individual who has achieved many remarkable feats. He certainly walks the walk. A cold shower a day keeps the doctor away. When you take a cold shower, all of those little muscles in your vascular system are activated and exercised. Within ten days of taking these showers, you will notice that your heart rate has decreased significantly, which translates to a lot less stress. Here is a link that talks about some of the benefits of cold showers. When you practice the breathing techniques of Wim Hof, and follow the Wim Hof courses, you can eventually control your autonomic nervous system, and boost your health. But, there also are some calming breathing techniques that you can easily do yourself. The only thing you need is just a few minutes of leisure time.

When it comes to the breathing... its really profound, and some of the things he has claimed are world changing if they can be duplicated by us common mortals. I believe in it (due to a book I read last year called "Breath: The New Science of a Lost Art" by James Nestor), and I believe that breathing the right way, and consciously breathing will be a boon for my health, and future in this very bleak world. (yeah I said that). The writing isn't perfect but it is steeped in character. With an open mind, you can enjoy this book and learn about an alternative method to well being. Now my turn, here goes … Jesus! I feel the air rushing from my lungs and body tightening up, recoiling, saying: “What the actual …” But I am actually in. His critics say he’s bold with his claims and he overstates what his methods can do. Wouter van Marken Lichtenbelt of Maastricht University has said Hof’s scientific vocabulary is “galimatias”, or nonsense. “With conviction, he mixes, in a nonsensical way, scientific terms as irrefutable evidence.”

Retailers:

I heard a podcast with Wim Hof and was fascinated by his breathing, cold shower and ice bath methods, so decided to listen on audible. Breath - His unique practices to change your body chemistry, infuse yourself with energy, and focus your mind This, compounded day after day, can lead to substantial positive changes to your life and career. It’s the little things that are done every day that add up.

Hof’s own life has been punctuated by near-death experiences, tragedy and epiphany. He almost didn’t make it into the world. After his identical twin brother, Andre, was born, their mother was taken to recover; no one knew there was another baby. “I almost suffocated, I came out purple,” he says. His mother, a devout Catholic, cried: “Oh God, let this child live! I will make him a missionary!” Which he kind of is, although maybe not in the way she envisioned. Additionally, referencing science and data is awesome, but it'd be great if an actual list of sources was added.Of the doubters, Hof says: “They can doubt, but let them try this once before they end up in the dead end of their own prejudice.”

The Wim Hof Method: Own Your Mind, Master Your Biology, and Activate Your Full Human Potential is, perhaps not suprisingly, repetitive and peppered with all kinds of mysticism and pseudo-science. You don’t need to be a yogi for twenty years to get into those deep altered states of both your mind and your body. By employing these simple breathing techniques, we are able to suppress the inflammatory markers in the blood. We are able to tap into the autonomic nervous system and suppress inflammation. We can regulate our mood, emotions, body temperature, and more. The Wim Hof Method is based on three simple, natural pillars: cold exposure, conscious breathing, and the power of the mind. The author believes that we should all experience happiness, strength, and health. One way of helping individuals achieve this is shining light on human consciousness, potential, and “the truth of nature.”On reflection, "the mission" Wim is on, is to bring spirituality (and it's associated wellbeing) into a form that everyday people can access easily and benefit from. This book certainly made me think. Unfortunately, Hoff is not the most talented of writers. Don’t get me wrong, I believe he is a very accomplished individual. However, I don’t think this book captures the essence of his ideas particularly well. He is a much better speaker, and it’s a shame he didn’t do the recording for the audiobook version of this. It may have helped clear things up a bit and to carry forward more of his personality. His social media videos are much more powerful and convincing. They make me want to try his method more. This book fortifies that the mind is the most powerful tool we possess, however very few use it like Mr Wim Hof. A positive and persuasive read Ant Middleton
