Aside from the added 3D depth-sensing lens, the Galaxy S10 5G’s photographic capabilities also remain largely unchanged. The rear camera array is comprised of a 12-megapixel unit with dual-aperture (f/1.5 or f/2.4), a 12-megapixel, f/2.4 2x telephoto zoom camera and a new ultra-wide-angle 16-megapixel, f/2.2 camera. O2 currently offers the Samsung Galaxy S10 5G, Galaxy Note 10 Plus 5G, Galaxy A90 5G, Xiaomi Mi Mix 3 5G and the Oppo Reno 5G in its 5G handset lineup. Samsung still claims "all-day battery life or a bit more", maybe because of the bigger screen here, or maybe just to play it safe. With moderate use – a couple of hours of Spotify streaming, a healthy amount of messaging and social media, an hour or two of Netflix and a smattering of gaming –we found it easy to end the night with an impressive 10% to 30% battery left. However, EE's 5G coverage does not reach all areas of every city. We've tested it out in London, and found that it's not consistent. In areas where 5G is available though, we're consistently getting speeds of around 200Mbps (versus around 15-20Mbps on 4G devices). Testing the display with a Klein K-80 colorimeter and SpectraCal's CalMAN and MobileForge software, we got slightly different results than DisplayMate Labs. In average, indoor light, with an image across 100 percent of the screen and the phone set to manual maximum brightness, we got a median brightness of 315 cd/m 2, the same as the Galaxy Note 9 and considerably lower than the Google Pixel 3 (400) or the Apple iPhone XR (556). But Galaxy phones' brightness go much higher in Adaptive mode than in manual mode, with the right stimulus: With Adaptive mode turned on and the phone moved close to a light, we got 435 cd/m 2, higher than the 403 cd/m 2 in Natural display mode that DisplayMate showed.
Sold? To complicate your buying decision, the Galaxy S10 5G is an even bigger and better S10 phone, the Samsung Galaxy Note 10 Plus is even more premium as a Samsung smartphone, and if you've got all the money in the world, the foldable Samsung Galaxy Fold is also available to buy – to say nothing of the S20 line and its incremental imrpovements. The Galaxy S10+ has a 6.4-inch, 3,040-by-1,440-pixel Dynamic AMOLED screen that's been rated as the best smartphone display available by Ray Soneira at DisplayMate Labs. According to Soneira's comprehensive tests, the screen is amazingly bright, colorful, and power-efficient, delivering the best handheld experience possible.
The Samsung Galaxy S10 Plus is the best 2019 Samsung phone
Despite these newer handsets, the S10 Plus is best Samsung phone, if you can handle the price and size. Battery is definitely one reason to choose the bigger S10+ over the smaller devices, as the other S10 models have 3,400mAh (S10) and 3,100mAh (S10e) cells.
The phone’s all-display front, which includes a dual-camera hole punch notch located at the top right of the screen, is also lovely. Our technical display tests recorded identical results to the regular S10 and S10 Plus – colour accuracy is almost as good as can be, with only slight oversaturation in some red tones, and the panel manages to cover 96.3% of the sRGB colour gamut. The Galaxy S10+'s Vivid display mode is similar to the Note 9's Adaptive, and the Note 9's Cinema display mode seems a little more accurate than the S10+'s Natural. Both phones are a bit more color accurate than the iPhone XS Max with TrueTone on. Fingerprint Sensor With the Galaxy S10+, you're definitely getting an object that feels expensive. It's big and made from gorgeous, premium-feeling material. Everything's tight; nothing's cheap (so get a case and protect it). At 6.20 by 2.92 by 0.31 inches (HWD), it's almost exactly the same size as the S9+ (and noticeably narrower than the iPhone XS Max). Yet it has a bigger, taller screen: 6.4 inches at a 19:9 ratio. Looked at in terms of pure area, that's 15.58 square inches, compared with 15.12 on the S9+, 16.08 on the XS Max, and 16.11 on the Galaxy Note 9. The hole in this 'punch-hole' display is extra-large, as Samsung dropped in two front cameras to take better portrait selfies than the single-lens Galaxy S10 and S10e front cameras.Good news, we’ve not found it too distracting. It's roughly the dimensions of the S9 Plus and feels better in-hand than the physically bigger Note 9, which has a 83.4% screen-to-body ratio.It's surprisingly easy to hold in the hand for a ‘Plus’-sized handset, though those with smaller palms will find the glass-and-metal finish offers little in the way of grip. We found ourselves using two hands, especially to type, and suggest a case before walking out of the store with this one.
Knowing that PowerShare turns off when your phone drops down to 30% battery life is comforting – as is realizing that your iPhone XS-owning friend has a 2,658mAh capacity for the price of your S10 Plus. Predictably, the results are fantastic. Colour rendition is practically perfect and the cameras manage to strike the right balance of noise suppression and detail capture. Video is also top-notch with buttery-smooth 4K resolution capture at 60fps. We got our hands on the OnePlus 7 Pro 5G on launch day and have been testing out the speed of EE's shiny new network. The Samsung Galaxy S10 Plus battery hits a new high for the S series with a 4,100mAh capacity. Last year’s S9 Plus was above average for Android flagships, delivering all-day battery life from its 3,500mAh unit, but the S10 Plus performed better for us in our tests. The one major improvement for stills is the wide-angle camera, which at 123 degrees is noticeably wider than LG's current 107-degree wide-angle units. Wide-angle photography is terrific: It helps you capture scenes and groups of people that otherwise wouldn't fit. My wife has an LG G7, and she uses wide angle a ton. If you want that latest screen, processor, Wi-Fi 6, and a nifty, better-located fingerprint scanner, meanwhile, there's the S10e. With a trade-in, the S10e is even cheaper than the S9 right now.And, of course, we have 5G coming around the corner. The upcoming Galaxy S10 5G will be an early adopter phone with limited network support. But next year's Galaxy S11 will likely be based on Qualcomm's Snapdragon 865, a 5G integrated chipset with support for both high-speed and broad-coverage 5G networks. That's the kind of shift that happens once every decade, not every year. The result is...just about as good as the Galaxy S9+. And that's good —the Galaxy S9 has an excellent camera. In good light, it's pretty much impeccable; in good light, all of the flagship phone cameras are pretty much impeccable nowadays. I took several comparative photos between the GS9+ and GS10+, and I really struggled to find any difference between the images in good, natural light. The 6.4-inch Super AMOLED display on the Samsung Galaxy S10 Plus makes this the biggest S phone screen to date – bigger than 5.8-inch Galaxy S9 Plus and matching the Note 9 screen size. It's also a lot better.
Samsung hasn’t showed favoritism here either: any Qi charging phone worked in our tests, including the iPhone XS Max. We used this feature more than we thought we might during our time at MWC 2019 – and we became quite popular. So far, Vodafone has 11 5G smartphones on offer, with the Samsung Galaxy S20, Galaxy S20 Plus, Galaxy S20 Ultra, Galaxy Fold, Xiaomi Mi Mix 3 5G, Samsung Galaxy S10 5G, Samsung Galaxy Note 10 Plus 5G, Samsung Galaxy A90 5G and Huawei P40 Pro all available to buy now. There's a single model of the Galaxy S10+ for all four US carriers, so it can easily be moved between them. The Qualcomm X24 modem inside supports all of the 4G bands used in the US, and many foreign ones. It has voice-over-LTE, voice-over-Wi-Fi, and the best possible voice codec for excellent call quality. Earpiece and speaker quality are impeccable. But that's all true about the S9 as well. The X24's advantage over last year's X20 modem is in going from 5x to 7x carrier aggregation, but no US wireless carrier does 7x carrier aggregation. In real-life use at MWC19 in Barcelona, it seemed like I never needed to recharge it. The Galaxy S10+ would regularly go two days and still have a decent charge. Can you chalk that up to the superior regenerative powers of Spanish mobile networks? Maybe. Samsung says it comes down to software: More intelligent management of what processes are running, combined with what DisplayMate says is a more power-efficient screen, makes for an ideal battery situation. The battery fast-charges with both wired and wireless connections, although to fast-charge wirelessly it needs an appropriate fast-charging wireless pad. The default resolution is Full HD+, but you can crank it to QHD+ and it's pin sharp, with HDR10+ for superior contrast and color. That's an important perk if you’re a movie-watcher on your phone – an idea which isn’t so crazy its size.
With a bigger screen, six cameras and a larger battery, it’s not all about faster mobile data speeds with the Galaxy S10 5G
Samsung comes very close to matching the iPhone XS score of 11,481 – outright speed has long been one advantage Apple has held over its chief rival. And storage makes the S10 Plus a wholly better value, starting at a healthy 128GB, of which around 110GB is actually available to you out of the box. If that’s not enough space, there’s a microSD slot which supports cards up to 1TB in size, or the 512GB and 1TB internal storage sizes – for an additional cost, of course. There's a similar segmentation with display sizes - the S10 5G is the largest at 6.7 inches in diagonal, with screens going down in size in each other of the other three. All of them are Infinity-O displays (punch holes for the front cameras), all of them are Dynamic AMOLED (where'd the 'Super' go?), and all of them are HDR10 capable. Only the Galaxy S10e's panel is flat and of 1080p resolution, the rest have curved edges and 1440p resolution. While top speeds of over 1Gbps are quoted, in reality we've seen speeds more consistently around the 200-400Mbps threshold - still comfortably faster than average 4G speeds. Let's start by comparing it with the Galaxy S9+, which is about the same size as the S10+. Yes, the S10+ offers incremental improvements in the screen, battery life, modem, processor, and Wi-Fi performance. But I think you'll be just as happy with the S9+, because other than battery life, I wasn't able to find big differences in lived experiences, as opposed to lab testing.
