About this deal

The company was founded by two Scottish brothers, Richard Callard and John Bowser, in 1779 in Maryhill, Glasgow during the Scottish Enlightenment period. Callard and Bowser was owned by Arthur Guinness & Sons from 1953 to 1982 when it was acquired by the American conglomerate Beatrice Foods. Who owns Callard and Bowser? If you are looking for incredible, high quality tasting confectionery, you have come to the right place !"

Daniel Callard bought out John Bowser’s stake in the business in 1872, but continued to trade under the established brand name of “Callard & Bowser”. The firm grew through strong branding and a dedication to product quality and purity, at a time when standards were often inconsistent.Callard & Bowser was sold to Major Alfred Ernest Allnatt (1889 – 1969), a property developer, in 1933. He was a publicity-shy and eccentric figure.

Champion & Reeves’ main customer is UK specialist confectionery wholesaler The House of Sarunds, which distributes to high-end retailers such as Harvey Nichols, Selfridges and John Lewis. Champion & Reeves cofounders: Andrew Reeves, production and development director and Jacqueline Champion, managing director. Delicately flavoured truffles with cool centres are in favour, but the Adlers also maintain tradition with collections of soft-centred creams, a successful clone of the discontinued Callard and Bowser Dessert Nougat (rice-paper wrapping, rose jelly) and recipes from Miss Reid, the previous owner of the Camberwell shop, once called Smile Away Sweets. It is a resin secreted by the female lac beetle and used in things like nail varnish. We don’t use it,” explains Jacqueline who says their product is all about “quality over quantity” and catering for people who want to treat themselves in moderation. By 1956 was part of a group of companies which were 80 percent owned by Arthur Guinness and Son; other companies in the group included William Nuttall, Riley Brothers (Halifax), and the Lavells chain of shops; this investment provided most of Guinness's non-brewing profit in the previous year [3]We are not Callad & Bowser - we are Champion & Reeves, but we produce everything in the style that once was Callad & Bowser,” said Reeves. Crowdfunding investment The Champion & Reeves range includes Dessert Nougat - with blanched almonds, pistachio, cherries, orange blossom honey and rose water, Butterscotch – with orange blossom honey and Cream Toffee with Macadamia - with double cream and macadamia nuts, among others. The business continued to operate at a loss due to a declining sugar confectionery market. 135 jobs at Hayes and Halifax were lost in 1982.

Happily I have found an easy way of making my own and wonder if anyone wants the method which I have listed below: Smith Kendon, which produced Altoids Curiously Strong Mints at Bridgend in Wales, was absorbed into Callard & Bowser to create the eighth-largest confectionery manufacturer in Britain. The irreverent, quirky personality of Altoids mints has led Altoids to be a top-selling mint in the U.S. Ingredients: Sugar, Gum Arabic, Natural Flavor (Oil Of Peppermint), Gelatin. The Callard & Bowser and Nuttall’s brands were discontinued, with the exception of Altoids. What is the best nougat? Daniel Callard employed 41 people by 1881. He had passed control of the business to his son, James Percival Callard (1859 – 1940), by 1891. Callard & Bowser butterscotch consisted of 11.7 percent butter fat and 79.3 percent sugar, according to an analysis conducted for the British Medical Journal in 1907.

We believe we are the only confectionery company in the world to add both blanched almonds and roasted pistachio to our nougat. In addition we add as much as 3 times more premium honey to our nougat than any of our competitors. We use the finest Italian cherries in our Rose Dessert Nougat and our vanilla is the most expensive, ten fold concentrated extract money can buy. Daniel James Callard (1824 – 1903) was born to a prosperous non-conformist family of London bakers. Members of the Callard family had been bakers in the metropolis since the seventeenth century, and Daniel Callard became a master baker himself. Streets is an Australian ice-cream brand owned by the multi-national British-Dutch company Unilever. It is part of Unilever's ice cream brand Heartbrand. The company is in a long term contract with dairy company Dairy Farmers. We've just opened up new channels into Canada and we will then be looking into the US once we've established Canada. Champion & Reeves has used the money to move to a new factory, while any excess funds will fuel international expansion. Factory opened by Prince Andrew

Callard & Bowser came about in 1837 formed by Daniel Callard and his brother-in-law, J. Bowser. They were most famous for their creamline toffees. They flourished and even acquired other manufacturers of dessert sweets such as William Nuttal of Doncaster and Smith - Kendon, and subsequently, became part of the Terrys-Suchard group. It was later folded into the Kraft Jacobs Suchard Group, which formed part of the Philip Morris Group until 2004. Callard & Bowser brand was later taken over by William Wrigley Junior’s Company. The company ceased all production of candy with the exception of 2 current brands - Altoids and Lifesaver - brands we know well today.
