About this deal

Enter the world of illegal or non-conforming golf wedges. These are wedges that do not meet the specifications laid down by golf’s governing bodies. While they may offer advantages like extra spin or improved control, they come with a catch: you can’t use them in official tournaments. The first thing I did with my new Indi wedges is took them to a simulator to get some numbers. I’d been using a 52 Vokey and a 56 Nike wedge for a few years now and I was really interested to see what the difference would be.

To determine this year’s best golf wedges, 20 testers hit a total of 15,960 shots in a variety of conditions. We also dedicated a portion of the test to dry and wet conditions. In my experience, feel is one area where smaller brands often come up short. Indi Golf has avoided that trap with their Stingray TT wedge.

What Are Illegal Golf Wedges?

For this Member Testing Opportunity we are looking for 4 Forum Members to test, keep and review a set of Indi Golf Wedges. Included in this test is a full virtual fitting with @indigolf! Once I saw the numbers, I could not wait to get them out on the course and see how they would play in the real world. They did not disappoint. In the golfing world, the terms “illegal” or “non-conforming” are used to describe equipment that does not meet the stringent standards set by the sport’s governing bodies. My 48* set AW is my 115 yard club which I used for partial shots all the way down to 70/80 yards. The 52 Indi tops out around 105 which was nice to have another full swing and became my default from there down to 70-80 yards given the strong performance I felt I was seeing on course. Upon final review of my approach stats, my 48 produced 9% higher GIR (66 vs 57) from up to 10 yards further from the green with 6ft closer proximity to hole (37 vs 44) and 0.1 fewer strokes to hole out. This testing opportunity will be limited to conforming wedges only but is available to golfers worldwide who are either left- or right-handed!

Bmart15 “I am 100% putting these wedges into play full time. I don't think anyone would turn down an improvement of more than 1.5 shots/round due to an equipment change. The staff at Indi were very helpful discussing a gapping setup which also contributed to the improvement” The rationale behind these stringent rules is to maintain a level playing field and uphold the skill-based nature of the game. In essence, while these non-conforming wedges can improve performance, they are seen as undermining the game’s traditional challenges, thus they are not permitted in official tournaments and competitions. The Impact of Using Illegal Wedges In the bag, the Stingray TT is a classy looking club. The “Indi” logo is centered, and the only other visible markings are the ports near the heel and the “TT” at the edge of the blade. myself included: Will you be testing the wedges in “winter” conditions? If I recall @Nunfa0, it’s going into his summer. It has been so dry here in eastern NC along with moderate temps, it’s more like later summer just with brown grass. Just seeing what the thoughts are for these. Me - planning on being out there as often as feasible, wet or dry….The importance of the short game in golf cannot be overlooked. If you’re serious about improving your golf, improving in this area is a must. Nike answered my questions about this by releasing the Air Zoom Infinity Tour NEXT% Shield weatherized golf shoes, geared toward protecting your feet from the elements. In my initial impressions, I thought of them as more of a baseball or football cleat than a golf shoe, but after wearing them, it is obvious they will be in the rotation for my colder rounds this Fall and Winter: If you play in soft conditions, wedges with high bounce are useful. On the other hand, if you play in firm conditions, look for low bounce. While a mid-bounce option is typically a safe play, mixing a variety of bounce options across your wedge set will give you the versatility to hit any shot the course presents. Utilize the Data When it came to the on course performance there were similar positive reactions. However we also wanted testers to see if these wedges lived up to the “Kings of Spin” tag line INDI Golf uses.

It is now November, and in Pennsylvania, forty degree days are more common than not. I still use these days to get some work in out on the range or the course, and in my experience, it’s the least congested time of the year. Plus, the tougher conditions make things a lot harder to control and when things are warm and there is no wind, it seems like an easier game to play. In short, you get better when you play in the cold and the wind and in adverse conditions. That being said, there are a lot of us who never have, and likely never will, play in any kind of USGA-sanctioned event. Which means we’re free to play with these bad boys.Indi Golf uses the tagline of “Kings of Spin” and offers wedges with both conforming and non-conforming grooves. Similarly, illegal wedges with specially engineered face textures can offer a heightened level of grip on the ball, making it easier to execute complex shots that might be more challenging with a conforming club. In short, these clubs can make certain aspects of the game easier, potentially lowering your score and increasing your enjoyment on the course. I reviewed full season stats in Shot Scope yesterday as I have likely played my last round. Overall the Indi wedges performed well on both approaches and around the green. The 56* has performed noticeably better than either my previous 54 or 58 and is staying in the bag. The 60*LW has been an outlier however. They’re really no different than you and me. Guys that just want to go out on the weekend and enjoy themselves on a golf course. At a shot level around the green, only 2/7 previous rounds with the 60* resulted in positive Strokes Gained totals with that club vs my benchmark. Of these 7 rounds, they were all played on different courses in 2 different provinces and in Florida across multiple golf trips.
