About this deal

Having broken up a variety of dog fights in my career, I can tell you that planning for it ahead of time makes it easier to focus the adrenaline rush into fast and efficient separation. This initial separation after a dog fight also gives you the time and space to remove items that may have triggered the altercation and consider whether you need to change any management strategies. For low-level scuffles, you may not need to keep the dogs separated for long, especially if you remove an item that they were fighting over. Following more intense fights, allowing time to decompress and for the stress chemical cortisol in their bodies to return to normal levels can be helpful. Be aware of their body language and whether they seem on edge or worried about the presence of the other dog when and if you reintegrate them. If in doubt, keep them separate and connect with a certified canine behavior consultant for support. Dogs teeth and jaws are so strong that they can easily cause serious injury to you if you try to intervene at the wrong times. Dog fights can be very scary when they happen. Our usual instinct is to scream and run into the fight hands-first to pull the dogs apart. But doing so could lead to severe injuries to both yourself or further injury to the dogs involved. However, if you invite a dog to come to your house and your personal dog bites the guest’s dog, you are at fault because you invited that dog and had a duty to make the home safe for your invited party.

Some breeds of dogs are more predisposed to biting than others, but this doesn’t mean an individual dog will. What matters the most is the dog’s upbringing and training. As such, even the most aggressive dog breed can act ideally given the proper treatment. If you’ve got dogs that aren’t predictable around other dogs, know an aggressive dog that lives around the corner, or know your dog doesn’t like your cousin’s pup – just keep the dogs separate.

How to Safely Use a Break Stick on Your Dog

Be careful, though. Pepper spray can affect the entire scene, and everybody close would get their eyes burning. Most dog fights are mostly snarling and snapping – there is a lot of noise but not much damage done. Almost all of these dogfights are easily ended with loud noises (shouting or air horns). It is best if there are two people to break up a fight, but you can do it by yourself if you have no choice. If both dogs are fighting and you are alone, you might need to tie one of the dogs to something solid. When one of the dogs is tied up, you must "break" the one that is not tied first, and pull him/her off right away. Immediately separate dogs in their own secure areas. This allows you time to evaluate whether either or both dogs need veterinary care. Any puncture wounds — even small ones — or lacerations in the skin require veterinary care as soon as possible to prevent infection. If the puncture is not bleeding profusely, you are able to flush and bandage it, you may be able to avoid an emergency veterinary visit and instead go to your regular veterinarian for care. The best way to handle a dog that likes to fight is to be proactive and train them to handle themselves better.

Again, can’t stress this enough: this should be the last resort. By getting in close to hit the dog, you are putting yourself in danger, too. So, before going this route, make sure you exhaust the other options, if possible. What Should You Do After the Dog Has Released Their Bite? Determine which dog is the aggressor and which one is the victim. If you break the bite of the aggressor, the situation will begin to alleviate itself. Using the pepper spray at the wrong time can raise tensions and might even get you into legal trouble if you misread the situation. Worst Case ScenarioWorst-case scenarios do happen, and although I do not condone the use of force on a dog, there are situations where it becomes life or death. If this is one of those instances, you need to cause injury or stun the aggressor dog. A lot of dog fights tend to appear sudden in nature, so the location as to where the fight occurred tends to be pretty important in legal proceedings. A friend who is in the police force said what I should have done was grab the collar and twist it, otherwise pulling it off like I did could have meant the other dog had a mouthful of my dog when I pulled which would have meant a much more severe wound. Spray citronella spray directly into the nose and mouth of the biting dog. The smell and taste can get them to release their bite. When they release the bite, immediately move the dogs away from each other, staying in control position until they are secured. Dog fights can get more serious. If dogs start truly biting, they can draw blood and even seriously injure the other dog. It isn't helpful and the dog will not understand what they are being punished for. In fact, this can actually increase a negative emotional response and higher stress, which can lead to increased aggression and fights in the future.

These fights can often be broken up by making a loud noise, using water or citronella spray, or by physically separating the two dogs.
