It is manufactured by Ninebot, who also manufacture the Segway branded scooters. The Essential has the normal Xiaomi folding design, 20 km (12 mile) range, 20 km/h (12 mph) top-speed, 12 kg weight and pneumatic tyres. It also boasts cruise control, front and rear lights, E-ABS brakes and a phone app (the Mi Home app seen below). The frame is basically the same as the M365. It’s a shame that the height of the handlebars is still not adjustable, which may prove uncomfortable for people who are short or very tall. Likewise, the handles cannot fold up, so the Mi Essential remains quite imposing when folded up, which can be a problem in smaller apartments.

The Xiaomi tyres are 8.5 inches in diameter and pneumatic. The idea is that air-filled tyres makes the ride smoother. The ride is indeed smooth as long as the ground itself is reasonably level. I have ridden the M365 extensively in Mexico City, where road repairs fall fairly low down on the "to-do" list, and found that, as long as major potholes are avoided, and a comfortable riding stance taken, most road surfaces can be comfortably traversed. Unsurprisingly, cobble stones present something of a hazard. The Xiaomi Essential has an official range of 20 km / 12.5 mi, and that range is confirmed in independent user tests so far. Some users on the heavier side report getting less range in their everyday rides, and even those are pretty rare. The Essential is an excellent low-to-mid-range electric scooter. However, in making it more attainable, Xiaomi have of course lowered the overall performance, which means I cannot quite give it five stars. Of course, you could argue that a cheaper electric scooter could never attain five stars with this logic, and this is a valid point. It's just the way I feel about the Essential having got used to the M365 (although I do appreciate the Essential has improved tyres, dashboard and lights). The Essential, with its lower price despite the upgrades, is perhaps aimed more at a younger market (than a daily commuter) and it makes an for excellent entry-level scooter. The main difference between the Xiaomi Essential, Xiaomi 1S and Xiaomi Pro 2 is the battery. Basically, the battery gets larger from the Essential to the Pro 2, meaning it can cover a greater distance on a single charge (20 km, 30 km and 45 km respectively). It also means the Essential is the lighest and the Pro 2 the heaviest. The other consideration of a larger battery is the time needed to charge it. The Essential takes the least time to charge, whereas the Pro 2 takes about eight hours. If you glance over the technical sheet of the Mi Electric Scooter Essential, you might think that it offers more or less the same performance as the Mi 1S. With its nominal power of 250 W and its maximum power of 500 W, it displays the same brushless motor, but software limited to a lower speed. Result: it will never exceed 20 km/h – against 25 km/h for its big sister. 5 km/h doesn’t seem like much, but once on the road the difference is enormous.The Xiaomi Essential basically follows the established Xiaomi standard of how an electric scooter should look like, and that’s great news for customizing it, as the vast majority of electric scooter accessories out there are made to fit the Xiaomi and other popular models. All three scooters come with the dashboard from the original M365 Pro, meaning they offer a speedometer (alongside a few other symbols) as well as the battery indicator. The modes are the same across the scooters (and slightly different from previous versions). They all have "Normal", "Pedestrian" and "Sport" modes, but the top of the Normal and Sport mode is less on the Essential (see below). The Essential's handlebars also differ, inasumuch as they are foam instead of thermoplastic rubber.

As this scooter is a fairly new release, it’s still too soon to empirically say how long of a lifespan you can expect from it. However, given that it comes from arguably the best scooter brand in the world, and it has learned a ton from the mistakes of the other Xiaomi models (most of which were the best-selling and most popular scooters ever made), it is safe to say that the Xiaomi Essential will go for years and years without major defects. All we have so far are early owner reports, and they are pretty much all brilliant, with owners reporting very few defects on average. At this rate, I must admit that I almost wanted to pull out a book while driving to pass the time … Regarding its dimensions, no surprise, they are strictly identical to the other models of the brand, namely 1.14 meters high, 1.08 meters long, and 43 cm wide – at the handlebars.
