About this deal

The only London dry gin made in India. Copper pot distilled with botanicals sourced from India and around the world. This gin has clean juniper and fresh lemon peel on the nose and a zing of ginger on the finish. It also impressed judges when it came to a tasting of navy strength expressions with its “lovely balance of citrus and herbal, sugary hit up front and bittersweet finish”, securing the product another Master medal.

Read on to discover 10 brands that took home Master medals in the first part of our 2023 Gin Masters competition. The 20% ABV range of Edinburgh Gin liqueurs include Raspberry, Elderflower, Plum & Vanilla, and Rhubarb & Ginger. Gin Gin is India’s first hemp gin and it was founded by Shubham Khanna, who travelled to New York to study the gin-making process.Greater Than is available in Goa, Mumbai, New Delhi and Bengaluru, and is great to have as a classic gin and tonic. Stranger & Sons You can also make Negroni’s Gimlets or classic Martinis with this Indian gin brand. Jaisalmer Indian Craft Gin

Indian brand Hapusa Himalayan Dry Gin was one of eight Master medallists in the Contemporary flight. The inclusion of turmeric from Tamil Nadu might be a surprise as it is usually only seen in cooking. But the turmeric and also ginger from Assam provide the gin’s aromatic spice. The rest of the botanicals, green cardamon and raw mango are the sweet spices and, lastly, almonds from Goa give this purely Indian gin its smooth finish. A true celebration of Indian ingredients! One judge said of the Master-winning expression: “Cherry and almond notes on the nose, tart, juicy and plummy on the palate with a welcome sour greenness on the finish.” Nose: Definitely a fragrant gin. Hapusa hopes you will experience pine forests and wildflowers on the nose – and I feel that it’s too divine of a description not to smell those in a gin from India! In the Cask Aged flight, González Byass’ London Nº1 Sherry Cask scored highly with the judges for being “light, fresh and fruity with a good balance of complexity”. Hapusa Gin is made to a one-shot method on Nao Spirits’ 1000-litre copper pot still, Agatha. All of the ingredients are added to the pot alongside a neutral wheat spirit and driven gently through the copper by distiller Jay Dhawan. Dhawan, incidentally, joined the team by pure chance: he happened to bump into Virmani during a bar training session and they formed a bond that would see him swap the shaker for an altogether more challenging vessel. A further group was formed of: Marie Cheong‐Thong of The Larder at 36; Masha Twemlow, associate at International Drinks Specialists; and Tobias Gorn, co‐founder and senior partner of International Drinks Specialists, who chaired the panel. In 2015, the world was going through a “Gin-aissance” and yet, two bar owners in Delhi who waited expectantly for the tsunami of Gin brands were left high and dry. The country where Gin & Tonic was invented and where exotic gin botanicals are found in most home kitchens was still in the dark ages of Gin. If they wanted Gin, they were going to have to make it themselves. Näo spirits was formed in 2015 by Anand Virmani and Vaibhav Singh, when the two friends from Delhi, India felt like the gin renaissance wasn't hitting the country with the same force as it did the rest of the world. The two bar owners felt that the country where gin & tonic was invented needed to step up and they decided to take matters into their own hands. They procured a copper pot still, named it Agotha, and started experimenting with various spices, herbs, and fruits. Sarah Miller, founder of the Gin A Ding Ding blog, chaired another group, which included: Ian Wisniewski, freelance writer, and Emma Stokes, ‘chief monkey’ at Gin Monkey.

Tasting Notes
