About this deal

My personal Hibs Hero. Along with Lawrie a toss-up for the best Hibs striker of them all. Joe was world-class, make no mistake. Lightening-fast, a cannonball shot with both feet and a superb header of the ball in spite of his modest height. A feisty attitude on the pitch also made this man the complete centre-forward. A great man off the pitch to boot. From there Reilly moved to Edinburgh Thistle where he was switched from his normal inside left role to that of centre forward, scoring goals galore and attracting the attention of Hibs. When the Club asked him to sign the pen was out and used almost before the question had finished being asked! At first he played outside right in the reserves and although always remembered as a centre forward he was also an exceptional winger, winning caps for Scotland on both the right and left wing. I was glad to see P & G's mention of this man earlier in the thread. A forgotten Hibs hero but surely one of the greatest of them all. Jimmy was an inside-forward for the great 'Wembley Wizards' and vastly talented as a big money move to Everton will testify. Noted as something of a 'clown prince' of his time and a great entertainer with his intricate ball skills. Wed 15 Aug 1945, Hibernian 4 Hearts 1, Wilson Cup Final". London Hearts Supporters' Club. [57] Hughes, who made high-profile signings such as Anthony Stokes [58] and Liam Miller, [59] led Hibs to a good start to the 2009–10 season. [60] 2010s: Scottish Cup success [ edit ]

Smith (302 goals), Reilly (238 goals), Turnbull (202 goals) and Ormond (189 goals) occupy the top four places on Hibs’ all-time top goalscorers list, with Johnstone in at number seven having scored 100 goals despite making less appearances than his cohorts. a b c d "Average Attendances". fitbastats.com. Hibs frequently participated in the Fairs Cup during the 1960s, winning ties against Barcelona [33] and Napoli. [34] However, the club achieved little domestically until former player Eddie Turnbull was persuaded to return to Easter Road as manager in 1971. The team, popularly known as Turnbull's Tornadoes, finished second in the league in 1974 and 1975, and won the League Cup in 1972. The club also won the Drybrough Cup in 1972 and 1973, [35] and recorded a 7–0 win over Edinburgh derby rivals Hearts at Tynecastle on 1 January 1973. Way before my time, so going only on what I've read, but Tommy Younger must be worth a shout? Seemingly an excellent keeper.Hibernian Football Club ( / h ɪ ˈ b ɜːr n i ə n/), commonly known as Hibs, is a professional football club based in the Leith area of Edinburgh, Scotland. The club plays in the Scottish Premiership, the top tier of the Scottish Professional Football League (SPFL). The club was founded in 1875 by members of Edinburgh's Irish community, and the name is derived from the Latin for Ireland. [5] Nowadays, while the Irish heritage of Hibernian is still reflected in the name, colours and badge, [5] support for the club is based more on geography than ethnicity or religion. [6] [7] [8] [9] Their local rivals are Heart of Midlothian, with whom they contest the Edinburgh derby. Car - The route you’ll take to Easter Road depends on where you’re coming from, but generally speaking you’ll want to get onto the A1 and then follow the signs. Hardie, David (2 November 2010). In an era when Hibs boasted great goalkeeping from Rough and Leighton, Goram shone as the best-ever goalie for me - not only for Hibs but for Scotland too. The Famous Five is the collective term for Hibernian's forward line of Gordon Smith, Bobby Johnstone, Lawrie Reilly, Eddie Turnbull and Willie Ormond. The north stand at Easter Road was named in their honour when it was rebuilt in 1995. [1] All five players have been inducted into the Scottish Football Hall of Fame. [2]

Hibs’ Famous Five (from left-right: Gordon Smith, Bobby Johnstone, Lawrie Reilly, Eddie Turnbull, Willie Ormond)The works of author Irvine Welsh, particularly Trainspotting, contain several references to Hibernian. [135] The team is often mentioned in casual conversation and is the team many of his characters support. [136] Visual references to Hibs are noticeable in Danny Boyle's film adaptation of Trainspotting; [137] Francis Begbie wears a Hibs shirt while he plays five-a-side football, while many Hibs posters and pictures can be seen on the walls of Mark Renton's bedroom. Sectarianism of a more muted kind also lay beneath the Hearts and Hibs split in Edinburgh Good teams, however, don’t just happen they need to be assembled and cultivated and the Hibernian team which boasted the Famous Five was no different. Gordon Smith was first to join in 1941 with the others breaking into the team at various stages up to 1946. Lamont, Alasdair (23 September 2012). "Hibernian on the road to recovery". BBC Sport.
