About this deal

In Lex’s later retelling, his parents couldn’t afford to send him to college, so he studied for a law degree by correspondence. I could never substantiate this claim that attending university in person was out of his financial reach. There are plenty of people who are not very well off and still attend university, and the Greensills weren’t so poor. Certainly, however, the story embellished his credentials as extremely hard-working and driven and supported his ‘helping-out-the-little-guy’ mission statements. But in 2019 Mr Collier refreshed calls for Mr Johnson to apologise. Asked about the politician’s claim the conversation was a joke, Mr Collier told The Guardian: “I didn’t treat it as a joke… I warned my wife to be careful about who she answered the door to. I took it seriously at the time and it concerned me. I was worried, certainly worried enough to put my wife on a warning.” Misrepresenting the people of Liverpool When I started to look into it based on this documentation I received, I realized Greensill was the story. And it didn't really take an awful lot of digging to figure that out. NATHAN HUNT: In the end, it was actually a small insurance company that collapsed the house of cards that was Greensill Capital. How did that come about? Well-researched, cool and reserved. Mavin examines another charismatic charlatan to add to the pile of grifters who've managed to wile their way into powerful circles and use that as well as some, ahem, "creative accounting", to squander hundreds of millions of dollars in a fraudulent pyramid scheme. The book shares many of exactly the same beats as Dan McCrum's Money Men: A Hot Startup, A Billion Dollar Fraud, A Fight for the Truth: a journalist sniffing out the story and doggedly pursuing it; a charismatic and confident (thrown eventually into desperation) fraudster; intimidation; attempts to spike stories; legal action; last-minute reprieves (in this case the provision of SoftBank funds) but an eventual comeuppance and collapse.

The Pyramid of Lies by Duncan Mavin review – the disgraced

I was left, yet again, shaking my head about how greed makes fools of many and millionaires (if only for a while) out of some. Brilliant book showing how to fool most of the people all of the time and why politicians who engage in lobbying should be held accountable when it's proven that they gave a b "Egypt says has found pyramid built for ancient queen". To its founder, Greensill Capital is more than a business: his whole new identity depends upon it. As the story unfolds, we see his drive and determination evolve fatally into messianic ambition and a blinkered disregard for differing views. Gardner, Helen (1980) [1926]. De La Croix, Horst; Tansey, Richard G. (eds.). Art through the Ages (7thed.). New York: Harcourt Brave Jovanovitch. p.68. ISBN 0-15-503758-7.A very well written account of a very complicated business that can be understood by anybody. There are explanations for all technical matters so that you are never left in doubt as to what was really going on. DUNCAN MAVIN: This is also kind of really key to Lex Greensill, right? So you and I might call out a lie. He might say, well, look, I was in the White House, and I gave some advice. So is it really a lie? I think this is also -- you're getting to the heart of one of the real problems with exactly this sort of business. And by this sort of business, I mean, fast-growing tech businesses with kind of visionary founders where there is a reward for them to saying -- making outlandish claims, pushing their reputation and their ambitions as far as it will possibly. Mr Johnson apologised on Wednesday afternoon for attending the gathering, marking the first time he has publicly admitted to attending the event at Downing Street.

If we can pull off [a public listing]”, Lex Greensill says in early 2020, “me and my brother will be the richest men in Australia”; just over a year later, he tells one of his major shareholders, “It’s over... I’m ashamed for what I’ve done to my family name”. As ever, the dream dies gradually, then suddenly. NATHAN HUNT: One of the things that Greensill focused on, very early on in his career was the idea of supply chain finance, the possibilities of supply chain finance. Certainly, Greensill didn't invent this. It's been around for a long time. I'm wondering if you can tell me a bit about what is supply chain finance? Many pyramids are in a poor state of preservation or buried by desert sands. If visible at all, they may appear as little more than mounds of rubble. As a consequence, archaeologists are continuing to identify and study previously unknown pyramid structures.

The three smaller pyramids in the foreground are subsidiary structures associated with Menkaure's pyramid. So many of these supply chain finance assets, the biggest insurers in particular, the pension funds and so on, they can't invest in them because they're not investment grade. And so the way you make the investment grade is you take out trade credit insurance, and that makes them investable for a much broader group of investors. The trouble for Lex was a lot of the big trade credit insurers wouldn't work with him. They met him over the years, and they dealt with them over the years and found they didn't like the way we did business. The overall journey has been well covered and does focus a lot more on the personality of Lex Greensill and how multiple sophisticated companies could have this call through their controls. Discovery Channel Nederland". Discoverychannel.co.uk. Archived from the original on 5 December 2004 . Instead, Credit Suisse and Japan's SoftBank are nursing billions of dollars in losses, a German bank is under criminal investigation, and thousands of jobs are at risk. A few years ago, I made it into an intimate meeting at the "top table". Just me and the top brass. I had prepared copious notes to discuss the large deal that was imminent. But I hadn't prepared to discuss horse racing, the ownership of horses, or the best dogs to keep at stables. Finally, in the evening, there was a lavish dinner. About fifty guests attended on this occasion; sometimes it was as many as seventy. Lex ruled the room like a mandarin, surrounded by his courtiers. The earliest known Egyptian pyramids are found at Saqqara, northwest of Memphis, although at least one step-pyramid-like structure has been found at Saqqara, dating to the First Dynasty: Mastaba 3808, which has been attributed to the reign of Pharaoh Anedjib, with inscriptions, and other archaeological remains of the period, suggesting there may have been others. [6] The otherwise earliest among these is the Pyramid of Djoser built c.2630–2610 BCE during the Third Dynasty. [7] This pyramid and its surrounding complex are generally considered to be the world's oldest monumental structures constructed of dressed masonry. [8] NATHAN HUNT: Duncan, you've been following the Greensill story for years. I'm wondering how early did you know that this story wasn't going to end well?

He’d also expanded his CV, collecting a list of impressive accolades: world champion of the 1998 Junior Chamber International Public Speaking Competition; finalist in the 1999 Young Australian of the Year Awards (he was beaten by Bryan Gaensler, an astronomer and expert in magnetic fields and supernova remnants); two-term appointee to the Asia Pacific Development Council on bilateral trade and education ties; 1998 Young Citizen of the Year for Shire of Burnett in Queensland. He could speak a little Japanese and he’d become a Justice of the Peace. He was the director of five separate companies, including Greensill Corporation Pty. A very, very difficult firm to deal with. And I suppose that was probably one of the biggest red flags, right, that if somebody is so desperate not to tell you the truth, not to answer your questions, even questions which seem pretty straightforward, then that's a real red flag. If you've got a genuine business that's genuinely growing faster that is being done in a very honest and well organized and well structured way, then you're probably fine answering difficult questions from journalists. But if you've got a business which fundamentally is not doing what it's supposed to, then that's always going to be a difficult relationship. Work on the flat above No 11 began in April 2020, while the Prime Minister was in hospital with Covid. Reports at the time suggested his wife, Carrie Symonds, was horrified at the “John Lewis furniture nightmare” left behind by the Prime Minister’s predecessor, Theresa May, though she has denied the claims.
