About this deal

The cheaper versions run to a random cleaning pattern and bump around your rooms blindly, cleaning as they go. This works up to a point but it can take a while for these types of vacuum to finish cleaning a room and, although they do their best to cover all the floor, they often miss spots here and there. Now that you know all there is to know about these rugrats, here are all the best robot vacuums we tried out. Despite rapid developments in the category, Roomba's latest entry in the 600 series remains a good first model for newcomers because of its reliable performance and low price. That said, we highly recommend a lower-maintenance self-emptying model if you can stretch your budget; with the Roomba 694, you need to manually empty the bin at least every few cleaning runs.

These days, automatic dustbin emptying is becoming a standard robot vacuum feature. While most self-emptying robot vacuums transfer the contents of their bin into a bag, the Shark IQ Robot XL takes a different approach. It has two dustbins: one in the robot itself, and a larger one in the base station that only needs to be emptied about once a month. The advantage of Shark's bagless auto-empty system is that you never have to worry about running out of bags. How to choose the best robot vacuum cleaner for you How well do they deal with household obstacles? Self emptying: Most robot vacuums have small dust collection bins and so need frequent emptying, but some can empty themselves into a larger base-station bin and then continue to clean. These robots tend to be more expensive, though, and the base stations occupy more space in your home. As much as we love our four-legged pals, we don't love cleaning up their hair or the messes they make. So we really like this Roomba, which excels at cleaning up after your pets.Another good smart vacuum is the Dser RoboGeek 21T. It comes with a basic app, as well as magnetic strips. It’s not as powerful as the V7S, though. Carpet areas will benefit from some of the more powerful settings, but we found the standard setting to be more than suitable for easy-cleaning hard flooring. Boost IQ adjusts the suction power automatically as the vacuum cleaner transitions between different types of flooring. The RoboVac 15C Max can also run up to 1hr 40mins on a single charge and is compatible with Alexa and Google Assistant for a fully hands-off approach to your daily cleaning. At heart it's very similar to the Roomba S9, with the same mapping technology and Alexa and Google Assistant integration. It uses the same high capacity dust bags, which typically need replaced every 30 days, and you can buy it without the self-emptying base (that version is the i7 without the plus) if you want to keep the price down a bit. Like other types of vacuums, many of the best robot vacuums on this list and other models we've tested are effective at collecting pet hair, fine dust, and larger debris from floors.

During testing each robot is connected to Wi-Fi and controlled through the supplied app, where available. We test all the features and functions available, including navigation to a second storey, to ensure robots can handle switching between multiple maps. If a robot has a self-emptying station or comes with a mop attachment, we test those, too. Mapping & Navigation: In our tests, robot vacuums that feature camera or LiDAR laser navigation performed best, doing a better job at mapping your home and reducing the number of bump ins. The Ecovacs Deebot N10 has plenty going for it. It’s a decent vacuum cleaner that will do a good job of keeping your floor clean, especially if you send it out regularly. This is easy to set up using the Ecovacs app, which is well-featured and simple to operate. We wouldn't recommend cutting that corner if you have hairy or shaggy dogs, however: the reason we think this is such a good choice for pet owners is because its automatic emptying solves one of the big problems of vacuuming up after dogs, which is the sheer amount of hair they manage to shed. Our greyhound isn't exactly hairy, yet somehow she seems to shed her own body weight in fur every couple of days so we're constantly vacuuming it up and traipsing to the bin. This Roomba does that for you. The use of bags also helps reduce the presence of dog dander and other potential irritants, which is handy if like us you have family members who are allergic to it.Connected bots also typically generate statistics and maps of the areas they clean. Many even create personalized floor plans, allowing for targeted room cleanings and eliminating the need for you to use "virtual walls" to cordon off sections of your home. If you're looking for a robot vacuum on a budget, the Eufy 11S is worth considering. It has a reasonable price and that price is often discounted, so you’ll be hard pushed to find a rival that's such good value for money. As you’d expect from iRobot’s highest-end model, it’s not cheap (although worth noting it is currently on offer), and it wasn’t any faster than either of the other machines we tested from the brand. It can only be controlled via the app, but we found it clear to use, allowing you to set no-go zones, create cleaning schedules and look over the battery life and cleaning history. Mop attachments: As robot vacuums become more popular, we’re seeing more manufacturers build in mopping features as a way to set their robots apart. These use a small water reservoir with a cleaning pad attached to the bottom that drags around the floor as the robot makes its way around your room. You’ll still need to use a proper mop to get stubborn stains off, though: a mopping robot is only good for cleaning up light dirt and dust from hard floors.

Robit V7S Pro Robotic Vacuum Cleaner Hands-on Review of the Robit V7S Pro Robotic Vacuum Cleaner

Along with the vacuum itself, you get a remote control for easy operation. Change your vacuum’s settings, or run a one-off cleaning cycle with the push of a button. You also get a set of extra brushes. This is a great feature not offered by many robot vacuums. The brushes shouldn’t wear out any time soon, but it’s nice to have them when you need them. These small-scale vacuums are ideal for cleaning up spilt food and keeping on top of dust in-between more thorough cleans. They navigate around your home using sensors to avoid bumping into furniture, or by detecting (provided) magnetic strips that mark no-go areas. Some even map out where they’ve been, so no spot is neglected. We also note whether the robot cleans in a random or methodical pattern. Many of the latest models feature a Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) laser (the same technology self-driving cars use) to map your home and plan an efficient cleaning route. But some affordable robot vacuums still haphazardly ping-pong from wall to wall, inefficiently crossing over the same space multiple times as they clean. While robot vacuums don't have crevice tools that work well down the side of your sofa or stairs, these machines usually have small brushes on the outside of their shells. The brushes do an excellent job of getting close to baseboards and ensuring that any crumbs or dirt on hard floors don't escape the vacuum's suction. However, as of yet, they can't clean the stairs. We consider pet hair, too. Using the real thing sourced from Battersea Dogs and Cats Home, our expert grinds it into the carpet to create a worst-case scenario before putting each vacuum to work. How much you spend depends on your budget and your must-haves in a robot vacuum cleaner. As a rule of thumb, the more features and functions a robot has, the more expensive it will be. This doesn't mean that the performance you are getting with a robot vacuum will be any less, though. Do robot vacuums work on pet hair? Bin capacity: Robot vacuums need emptying more frequently than a regular vacuum, but there’s still quite a variation in bin capacity from model to model. The largest you’ll see tend to be around 0.7 litres in size, but they can be as small as 0.4 litres. Some models have larger bins built into their base stations that they automatically empty into when charging, but these tend to be very expensive. The Robit V7S Pro Robotic Vacuum Cleaner is one of the more powerful robotic vacuums on the market. It provides an impressive 2,000 Pascals of suction, which will clean up just about any mess. Not only that, but the brushes are also well-engineered. And with extra sets of brushes, you can always replace them when they start to wear out. The dust hopper is also well-engineered. With a capacity of 0.6 liters, you won’t have to worry about changing out your dust bin.

Don’t worry about them taking a tumble though, as built-in sensors prevent this from happening. Do robot vacuums clean corners? Many robot vacuums cope well with hardwood floors and carpeted areas, but if your home has many staircases, you’ll need an additional vacuum to clean the stairs. With many robot vacuums suitable for programming from your phone, you’ll be able to switch these devices on when you’re out and about and come home to clean floors. How much does a robot vacuum cost? The most disappointing element is the mop, which is a drag-and-wipe affair. You have to fill the reservoir with water, then attach the plate with cloth into the vac’s underside. This is drip-fed clean water as it wipes over your floors; however, it isn’t as thorough as robots that add movement to agitate dirt to remove it. They aren’t the cheapest, but they can bring extra convenience to your cleaning routine, and our GHI experts were impressed with their capabilities. They save time and effort compared to regular vacuum cleaners and are ideal for a mid-week clean. More advanced robot vacuums have lasers on the front of the machine and some on the underside of the device too. These lasers detect where furniture, objects, and edges are in your home, helping avoid bumps, and cliff detection prevents the machine from falling down the stairs. What is the best robot vacuum? An exception is the Shark IQ Robot Self-Empty XL, which has two dustbins: one in the robot itself, and a larger one in the base station that holds up to a month's worth of debris. When it's full, you simply remove the dustbin, hold it over a trash can, and then press the Empty button on the side. The bottom of the dustbin opens, and the contents fall out into the trash. Although allergy sufferers may prefer models that empty their contents into a bag, the IQ Robot XL is more convenient and wallet-friendly, because you don't have to worry about buying replacement bags. The Shark IQ Robot Self-Empty XL's large dustbin The best models to choose are ones that have rubber brushes that are free from bristles, so the pet hair doesn't get trapped around them. Although that's not to say robot vacuums with bristled brush bars aren't as effective at collecting the hair. If you choose one of these, look for a design with a tool to help remove pet (or human) hair that's got tangled to make your life easier. Can a robot vacuum replace a normal vacuum?
