Deep ruby/purple, with aromas of smoke, dark fruit, chocolate and floral and spicy hints; extra dry with medium-plus body and medium tannins; spicy dark fruit flavours persist on a medium-length finish, with smoky and chocolate notes speaking to generous oak ageing. I’d advise opening Alta Vista and letting it sit in the bottle for about an hour before drinking or a decanter for about 20 minutes. This cuvée is only produced in exceptional vintages and comes from the communes of Caillac and Mercuès in Cahors.

Here we have something a little different; a Bordeaux-blend malbec equivalent from world-renowned winemaker Michel Rolland. It’s oozing with delicate oak and the tannin structure is just sublime, rolling long into the finish. In 2018 the Catena Alta Malbec is sourced from Lot 18 of the Angélica vineyard, Lot 4 of the La Pirámide vineyard, Lot 1 of the Nicasia vineyard, Lot 6 of the Angélica Sur vineyard and Lot 9 of the Adrianna vineyard. There’s prune and blackcurrant, along with cracked pepper and cedar, then dark chocolate and cigar box. This boldness and intensity of flavours continues on the palate with a well-balanced acidity and an incredibly long finish.
Further flavours of blackcurrant, a bit of menthol and a subtle peppery spicy note accompanied smooth tannins and an uplifting, flavourful finish that lingered. Large diurnal swings in temperature contribute zippy acidity and textured tannins to give structure, and an herbal lift adds interest to the sappy finish.

The high and sunny Salta region of North West Argentina has a drier and more extreme climate than other parts of the country and because of that the Malbecs from here tend towards more concentration and fragrance. Achaval-Ferrer was founded in 1998 with the purpose of creating a smaller amount of sensational wines and they’ve managed to tick that dream box quite well. Alta Vista is a wonderful expression of multiple terroirs, given that it is produced from 5 different vineyards in Mendoza. Dark chocolate and black fleshy plums on the nose and palate of this full-bodied Argentine red wine made from the country's classic Malbec grape. The result is a wien with rich, soft and fruity aromas that lead onto a palate of plum jam, raisins, tobacco, chocolate, vanilla and toasted notes.
Winemakers who consider terroir and the impact it may have on their final wine, in my books, are approaching their winemaking on a more holistic level.

There’s plenty of red fruit, from strawberry to cherry, and lovely additional characters of cedar wood and cigar box, along with lots of tannin, giving a slightly Bordeaux-like edge to the finish.If you’re ideal tipple is a robust, dark, inky wine bursting full of flavour, dark juicy fruits, chocolate and ripe tannins, this guide may be handy. An initial explosion of strawberry syrup and baked plum pie hits your tongue with layers upon layers of blackcurrant, oak and tobacco coming into play on the finish. Plum aromas, red field berries, and a meaty quality on the nose along with violet, sweet spice, tobacco, and hints of menthol. Note: pair this beauty with a smoked ham hock dish for one of the best food-and-wine duets I’ve ever experienced.
